Local museum celebrates National Museum Day

ST. ANDREWS, Fla. (WJHG / WECP) – Saturday is National Museum Day, and what better way to celebrate it than by showcasing one of Bay County’s museums.

“For every Bay County, if you’ve never been to the Panama City Publishing Museum, I don’t think you deserve to call yourself a Bay County resident,” Brad Stephens, Sunjammers owner and museum enthusiast.

Sunjammers owner Brad Stephens is passionate about the Publishing Museum.

“There is so much history inside these four walls here and even the history of the ground. It’s not the original upstairs room, but I bet if you walk in they’ll tell you where that floor came from and it’ll bring back childhood memories you didn’t know you missed ”, Stephens said.

Volunteer Nancy Hudson says the museum isn’t just a staple on National Museum Day.

“People have to remember that public museums are theirs and it’s their museum 365 days a year,” Hudson said.

“It’s really cool to know a little bit about the heritage and how Panama City was born. We got a little sneak peek at some of the stuff here. So it’s pretty cool to be here, ”said Nashalie Jimenez, a regular at the museum.

“They were telling us how St. Andrews was discovered and how the lady who three-quarters owned this area, she was the first lady to vote in that area. So it’s really cool to see that it’s always great to see the power of women, you know, ”said Nancy Cardenas, another onlooker at the museum.

For Janis Boatright, board of directors of the Historic St. Andrews Waterfront Partnership, the day could not have happened without the help of local community partners.

“It’s great here in St. Andrew’s that our local merchants are buying this museum as well. They understand how important this is and we couldn’t have done it without their support today. It’s amazing, ”said Boatright.

For those who wish to come and discover the museum for themselves. It is open Tuesday to Friday from 1 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The museum is still
