Queen Alexandra Hospital and Royal Navy National Museum in Portsmouth Partner to Create ‘Chat Rooms’ to Help Dementia Patients

Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust (PHU) has partnered with the National Museum of the Royal Navy (NMRN) to produce boxes filled with photos, objects and information sheets, which patients will use to discuss with patients and the activities coordinator Emma Chewter.

The boxes have themes such as love, history, and memories of visiting the ship itself.

Emily Oliver, Chief Dementia Nurse, said: “We are delighted to be working with the National Museum of the Royal Navy on such an important pilot project.

“We are passionate about improving outcomes and experiences for our dementia patients here at PHU and these ‘chat boxes’ are just one of the ways we can do that as part of reminiscence therapy. “

Sharon Court, Patient and Public Engagement Coordinator at PHU, said: “Before working for Trust, I did a lot of creative practice in the community so I know how beneficial it can be for them. people to be able to engage with objects and creative activities.

“We have the historic shipyard on our doorstep and many people connect with it in different ways.

“The team at the National Museum of the Royal Navy have been so helpful and considerate in meeting the needs of our patients and we have also worked closely with the Infection Prevention and Control team to ensure that we can provide the safest and most engaging opportunities for our patients.

National Museum of the Royal Navy Community Producer Joanna Valentine added, “HMS Victory is an iconic ship and we’ve created these special themed ‘chats’ for people to explore their connection to the ship.

“Did they visit him on a school trip?” Are you having a family day out there? Serve cocktails on board or have a fridge magnet with the ship?

“Victory is everywhere in our city and we hope that by exploring themes related to HMS Victory, families and staff will learn more about each other and promote the well-being of patients. “
