SP leader Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday sought to defend his widely criticized statement assimilating Muhammad Ali Jinnah with Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Jawaharlal Nehru and saying they helped India gain freedom even though a UP minister suggested a narco test to “glorify” the Pakistani leader.
As the row over the comments of Party Leader Samajwadi (SP) raged, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, without naming Yadav, called the comments “shameful and reprehensible” and warned people against political parties that equate Sardar Patel with Jinnah. His ministerial colleague Anand Swaroop Shukla also said that praise for Jinnah should go to Pakistan.
“READ HISTORY BOOKS AGAIN”: AKHILESH
Yadav for his part attacked his detractors, asking them to reread the history books.
Asked by reporters in Lucknow about his response to the feud over his remarks that sparked controversy ahead of the Assembly elections at UP, the former chief minister hit back: “Why should I say context? to reread the books. “
Yadav’s counterattack drew a strong reaction from UP BJP chief Swatantra Dev Singh, who in a Hindi tweet said: “The love for Jinnah remains intact. Akhilesh Yadav ji please please tell which history books must be Pakistani. “
October 31 Yadav had said: “Sardar Patel, Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and (Muhammad Ali) Jinnah studied at the same institute and became lawyers. They helped (India) gain freedom and never shied away from any struggle. “
“GET A TEST FROM NARCO”: MINISTER
Minister Shukla told reporters in Ballia that Jinnah was responsible for dividing the country.
“Jinnah is a villain, that no Indian would like to see or listen to. Akhilesh Yadav must clarify under what pressure, greed, does he glorify Jinnah?”
“I want Akhilesh Yadav to come forward and take his narco test,” he said. A narco test involves the injection of a drug, sodium pentothal, which induces a hypnotic or sedative state in which the subject’s imagination is neutralized, and is expected to disclose true information.
Shukla further stated that those who brandished “zindabad” slogans in praise of Jinnah, having thoughts and feelings of Jinnah in their mind, have no place in India. “They should go to Pakistan themselves,” added the head of the BJP.
‘SHAMEFUL, CONDEMNABLE’: CM
Speaking at a public event in Auraiya, Adityanath, without naming Yadav, said a party leader attempted a few days ago in a speech to assimilate Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the man who symbolized the unity of India, to Muhammad Ali Jinnah, who divided the country. The chief minister said the entire state should reject these words “shameful and condemnable”.
“Sardar Patel, who symbolized the integrity of India, united more than 563 kingdoms with India (at the time of independence). We have to understand the state of mind of the elements, which are trying to assimilate Sardar Patel in Jinnah Sardar Patel united the country, while Jinnah divided the country, the two cannot be contemporaries (‘samkaksh’).
“Sardar Patel was a ‘rashtranayak’ (national hero), but Jinnah was the one who broke the unity of India. We have to be mindful of people who try to assimilate them,” Adityanath said.
SP REQUESTS THE Dismissal of the Minister
The SP also called for Shukla’s dismissal for accusing Yadav of obtaining economic support from the Pakistani spy agency ISI.
Shukla said on Tuesday that Chief Minister Adityanath had become a challenge for the Islamic world. “The leader of the Samajwadi party, Akhilesh Yadav, receives all the support from them. Akhilesh gets ‘sanrakshan aur sujhav’ (patronage and guidance) from the ISI. It is possible that he will also receive economic support from it.”
SP workers staged a protest at the district Collectorate building on Friday to demand the registration of a complaint against the minister. The opposition party demanded that a complaint be brought against Shukla for making insulting remarks against the party leader and spreading animosity in society.
SP Ballia district unit chief Raj Mangal Yadav, meanwhile, said there would be intense protests against the minister and that he would not be allowed to enter the district if the administration does not take action against him.
